Wealthy & Wise Celebrates with the Community at the 2026 Howard County AAPI Festival

Updated: Jun 3

On May 30, Wealthy & Wise participated in the 2026 Howard County Asian American and Pacific Islander Festival (AAPI Festival), held at Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods in Columbia. The event celebrated the culture and heritage of the Asian and Pacific Islander community and drew a strong turnout. It was co‑hosted by Howard County, the AAPI Commission, and the Inner Arbor Trust.

Now in its fifth year, the festival brought residents together to share the diversity and community spirit of AAPI cultures. Under the theme “Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together,” the event featured traditional performances, cultural activities, exhibitions, food trucks, and community booths.

At the opening ceremony, Kui Zhao, Chair of the AAPI Commission, emphasized the importance of building a respectful and inclusive community. County Executive Calvin Ball highlighted unity and safety for all residents and officially proclaimed May 2026 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

State Senator Clarence Lam, Delegates Natalie Ziegler and Chao Wu, and several county councilmembers attended to recognize the contributions of the AAPI community. Senator Lam noted that AAPI residents make up about 20% of the county and stressed the need for solidarity against discrimination. He also presented commendations to the AAPI Commission and the Inner Arbor Trust.

A highlight of the festival was the lineup of cultural performances. Representing Korea, the Lee Hee‑kyung Dance Company performed the Puppet Dance and Fan Dance, captivating the audience with elegant choreography and colorful costumes. Additional Korean performances included a lively Nanta show and samulnori, showcasing the energy and rhythm of Korean culture.

Around 50 nonprofits, cultural groups, government agencies, and small businesses hosted booths offering information and services. Families enjoyed performances and hands‑on activities, creating opportunities to learn about and connect with different cultures.

The festival reaffirmed Howard County’s identity as a diverse and inclusive community and strengthened bonds among residents through culture and the arts.
